An eye on safety – everywhere and at all times

We make mobility safe – today, tomorrow and in the autonomous future.

There are more than 1 million worldwide traffic fatalities each year, with 20,000 occurring in Europe alone. More than half of these fatalities are non-occupants of the vehicles. Added to that are numerous people impacted by the aftermath of accidents for the rest of their lives.

For 14 years now, we have made it our mission and a commitment to make a significant contribution to reducing these appalling statistics.

Automated driving and safety functions, with which we want to enable urgently-required new mobility concepts, are becoming an increasing part of our activities. That’s because we are convinced that these concepts can be implemented to a relevant extent for our environment and society only if autonomous driving becomes a reality.

With our experience, data, technologies and a large dose of curiosity, we bring innovative driving and safety functions into series production. In concrete terms, we examine and plan automated driving strategies, support drivers through features such as lane keeping and turning systems, or we help protect vehicle occupants and other traffic participants when an accident is unavoidable.

A history that paves the way to the future.

Green light for strong visions

VAIVA is founded as a joint venture between Audi AG and Andata Entwicklungstechnologie GmbH under the name ASTech (Today: Joint venture between CARIAD SE and Andata Entwicklungstechnologie GmbH). The start of the virtual design of function algorithms marks the beginning of our core expertise “integral safety.”

On the road to success

In 2011 we initially assume responsibility for development of the warning algorithm for the Audi lane assistant before setting up our accident research activities at a later point. This allows us to utilize our accident reconstruction expertise to draw conclusions regarding the effectiveness of assistance functions.

A broad spectrum for increased safety

Only a few years after our founding, we kick-off our HiL, modeling and simulation activities. We also begin to develop human models for use with concepts such as pedestrian protection.

Turning dangers into control

In 2013, the development of software for local danger identification marks our entry into the area of Car2X expertise. We also put our first function algorithm test bed into operation in order to validate airbag activation.

Safety in series production

We deliver the production software for the first generation of a “safety computer” that Audi deploys in several of its models. Meanwhile, we can also analyze the effectiveness of driver assistance systems in various Audi brands with our software.

Constantly looking forward

2015 marks another big success for the team as our development activities in the area of predictive collision warning and avoidance and side protection hit the streets after being validated.

A demonstration of series production

At the Berlinale, we showcase our expertise in the area of functions development and integration with an autonomous demo vehicle. But that’s not all. Even on the streets, VAIVA innovations such as our “pre-sense” functions package are also being employed in growing numbers of vehicles.

Virtually experiencing development success

We make great strides in the direction of virtual development, testing and validation with the introduction of the “Virtual Test Drive”. Later in the year our innovative intersection assistant, among other developments, hits the market.

Award-winning development

In 2018, multiple awards and an excellent NCAP rating offer a testament to our outstanding performance. The team is really delighted, because it shows how valuable our developments are and motivates us to take further strides.

Machine Learning by doing

We build our very first test vehicle, equipped with LiDar, radar and cameras, to generate data and experiences for our machine learning practice. We also present additional Car2X functions and celebrate our 10 year anniversary.

Challenge accepted

The first year of the pandemic obviously presents major challenges for us and our customers. We nevertheless – achieved all important milestones, audits once again confirm our automotive grade process maturity and we lay the groundwork for effective and employee-friendly remote work models.

2021 is all about even more focus, operative excellence, expanding our capabilities (perhaps together with you?) and continuing to grow the company. After all, we want to offer you the work environment you need to be successful and happy… 😊

We are expanding our unique value proposition within the services network of the VW Group and further establishing ourselves as a strong and preferred partner in our area of focus: ADAS, AD & Safety. Projects such as the concept phase and series implementation of active safety functions are essential for the development and successful realization of the VW Group’s future platforms.

Virtually experiencing development success

Over the past years, we have developed a wide range of important driver assistance and safety functions and brought them to series production together with our customers and partners. Our systems, which meanwhile can be found in millions of vehicles around the world, significantly increase road traffic safety each day.

We are currently experiencing a massive upheaval in our industry, driven primarily by technologies and global climate change, to which we must work together to quickly find strong answers. Mobility – either individually or collectively – serves as our design space. Individual vehicles are increasingly becoming spaces for living, working or even relaxing; in a certain sense a mobile home.

In the area of collective mobility, the focus is on vehicles that are made to be shared - conveniently, efficiently and safely. This changes and expands the requirements placed on our products and services. And we are actively helping to shape these changes. Groundbreaking innovations such as autonomous driving improve people’s lives. Autonomous driving is the future – with safety! But only with safety…

Today, our accident research, our scenarios, our functions definitions, our software code, our simulations and our validation activities lay the basis for the realization of our vision: safe (automated and autonomous) mobility for everyone and a reduction in the number of serious accidents to nearly zero. The nice side effect is that every day, we go down unexplored paths and develop things that are completely new, all based on what we are capable of doing, by learning every day and improving
